Celebrate 7-Eleven Day

To celebrate the invention of Slurpee, every year on November 7 at any 7-Eleven store you can score yourself a free Slurpee just by saying the words 'happy 7-Eleven day!'

I cannot remember if I was in Australia last year though. But I'm sure that I never had a 7-Eleven day back in Singapore. From the wiki it was said that in 2010, this promotion is from 0700 - 1411 which means a total of 7 hours 11 minutes. That seems ridiculously to me though because since young, I always associate 7-11 with that being open from 7am to 11pm. In fact based on the trivia on the cup, it is said that 'the name 7-Eleven came about in 1947 to highlight the store's opening hours.'

Anyway for this year, this promotion was indeed valid from 7am to 11pm. But from facebook, I read about stores keeping away their cups and refusing entry to children (perhaps they were rowdy too) and even to the extent of switching off the slurpee machine. That is really bad. Thankfully I got mine peacefully and without any queue at all (my friend had encountered a long queue thus abolishing the idea of getting one.)

And now for more trivias on the cup:
- 1977 - The first Aussie 7-Eleven opens in Oakleigh, Melbourne

- There are more than 600 7-Eleven stores in oz!
- There are over 42,400 7-Elevens on this planet alone. Who knows about the other ones...

- In '67 the slurpee was officially named after that delicious slurping sound

p/s: Back in school days, I used to did a case study on 7-Eleven. Somehow even till today, I'm still amazed by the business model of 7-Eleven and its expansion globally. Even though it is still affectionately known as the store that opens 7-11, it has turned into a 24 hours operating store in most parts of the world.
