Visit Palazzo Strozzi

Palazzo Strozzi is in the most convenient and most beautiful location in the city..

Or so Filippo Strozzi, a wealthy banker, felt since he took sixteen years, between 1473 and 1489, to acquire the land to build his future palazzo in the heart of the city, on the corner of via Tornabuoni and via Strozzi.

In the olden days, Via Strozzi was one of the major road axes of the roman Florentia and it was used as a racetrack during the San Giovanni festivities; whereas via Tornabuoni was one of the widest Florentine streets, habitually used for solemn processions. Thus I have no doubt about this being the most convenient
location in the city.

Construction began in 1489 for Filippo Strozzi, who sadly died two years later, after only the foundations had been laid. 15 buildings were demolished to make room for it. Building was finally completed in 1536 and although it only has three storeys, each floor is as tall as a normal palazzo.

Even the courtyard has a drainage system in place. The architecture plan is indeed well thought of.

Today, the palace is used for art exhibitions and also houses various institutes and a large library.
