Visit the The Mercato Centrale (Central Market in English), or Mercato di San Lorenzo
Once a central distribution point for fresh foods, meats and fish, the market was the main grocery shopping in Florence. However when supermarkets came on the scene, and folks found easier parking and the squeamish didn't have to look at animal carcases, central market's popularity went on a decline..
Foreign foodies (including tourists) and immigrants eventually changed the atmosphere of the market. Poorer immigrants didn't have cars, and searched for the raw ingredients for their own cuisines; foreign foodies wanted access to the famed foods of Tuscany e.g. boar roasts and cow stomachs.. and (perhaps) rabbit meat...
Eventually the market adjusted, and these days you can taste, eat full meals at the tavola calda canteen, much used by local workers where supposedly a three-course meal with wine for about 8 euros. Or get a sandwich.
A Dare Tip: If you're an adventurous eater, stop by Nerbone for an inexpensive lampredotto (cow's stomach) sandwich, a specialty of Florence. Hmm I tried it before at another place though, if you are interested to know my thoughts...
Check Bflygal Trails: Eat Florentine Cuisine
You can also gawk at the fish and several kinds of cow stomachs and intestines at the Tripperia. And if you are interested in some touristy souvenirs, some local Tuscan products suggestions include wine, biscotti, cheeses, and salami.
Address: Inside the Mercato di San Lorenzo, in Piazza del Mercato Centrale - Via dell'Ariento.
Opening times:
It opens every morning from 7.00 to 14.00, except for Sunday and public holidays.
In winter it is open only on Saturdays and days before holidays.
