Visit Milan San Siro Stadium

Take the Metro to Lotto-Fiera station.
Go past McDonalds (on your left),
and take Via Caprillo, following the line of trees along the edge of the Ippodromo.
This route takes you to the Curva Nord, the northern end of the stadium.
This is a fairly long walk but it will lead you to 2 interesting tourist spots.

1) Leonardo's Horse

Leonardo da Vinci worked on this project from 1482 to 1499. He virtually completed the original, in plaster, and was ready for casting. Unfortunately, that great sculpture was destroyed by the French invaders who ousted Leonardo’s patron, Ludovico il Moro, from power.

In 1977, Charles Dent, an American pilot and a great enthusiast of Renaissance art and Leonardo in particular, read about the story in National Geographic magazine. He decided that it was time to build the horse.

In 1982 the “Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse Incorporation” was founded, a non-profit organization whose sole purpose was the creation of the monument. The first model, about 8 feet high, had been completed by 1992 and a fibre-glass version was completed the year after.

Charles Dent died on Christmas day in 1994. But this did not impeded the work and sculptress Nina Akamu completed the 24-foot version using 12 tonnes of bronze to cast the horse in 60 pieces. These pieces were then welded together to form 7 subsections. They were transported to Milan on 19th July 1999, assembled here, and the final sculpture was unveiled by the American ambassador Thomas Foglietta on 10th September.

2) San Siro Stadium

The San Siro Museum is dedicated to both Inter Milan and AC Milan, and is located inside the stadium (Gate 14). The museum is open daily from 10am, with the last admission at 5pm. Tours depart hourly (with variations on matchdays).

Admission Fee: €12.50 for both museum and a stadium tour.

Alternatively you can take tram line 16 from Piazza Fontana (Duomo) to San Siro, stopping at the last station. This will take you straight to San Siro Stadium.
