Visit Milano Duomo

Duomo is a generic Italian term for the principal cathedral church.

Tip 1
Milano's Duomo is best visited in full sunshine when the interior is illuminated by the colourful mosaic of its stained glass windows.

Tip 2
The roof climb provides a unique and memorable opportunity to walk high on the roofs of the huge Gothic cathedral. The views are magnificent and the opportunity to see the pinnacles and sculptures close up along the way is worth the climb alone. And it’s only by walking up the last couple flights of stairs to the tippy-top that you can get an up-close look at the city’s symbol - the golden Madoninna, or little Madonna, who sits atop the Duomo’s tallest spire.

Entrance is from the north side of the cathedral (walk around left from the front). You can choose to walk up the 201 steps which are solid, square, and more roomy than many cathedral stairways.
Alternatively you can take an elevator for a higher price.

Tip 3
Every year in May and September a nail from the cross of Christ is displayed to worshippers and is retrieved from its resting place by the bishop who is hoisted to the nivola to reach it. Try to find the small red light bulb in the Dome, right above the choir in the apse. This is the most significant spot of the Cathedral as it is where one of the nails from Crucifixion of Christ has been placed.

Tip 4

Be prepare to remove your hats and caps as you entering the Cathedral. The security guards will check through your backpacks and bigger bags randomly.  Remember that entering a sacred place with open shoulders may be interpreted as an insult so cover up. To play safe, no short shorts, too short skirts, sleeveless t-shirts or tank tops allowed.
