Visit Murano

A visit to the famous glass-making Sessuo

Depending on where you are, you can take either Line 41 or Line 42 to Murano.

On the top to-do list is to watch a Glass-Blowing Demonstration. Probably can watch on in Seguso which is a family of glassmakers in Murano for free.

Glassmaking is an ancient tradition and art in the Veneto, and particularly on the islands of Murano. Glassblowers had to move their workshops off of Venice itself in 1291 due to fears the heat generated would burn the city down. Murano, a short boat ride away, is now home to some of the most beautiful glass art in the world.

The demonstration normally lasts around 15 minutes and will give an idea of how a furnace is used to melt the glass, how the glass is blown, and normally how a typical ornament is made by working the glass with the prongs.

As with most demonstrations, an opportunity will be given to purchase the shop wares after the show...

After that you can visit the Basilica dei SS. Maria e Donato and the Murano Glass Museum. Or just tour around Murano.

Alternatively you can take Vaporetto Lagoon North (LN) to Burano which is what I chose.
